Garage Door Off Track Repair

Garage door off track repair is needed when one or more rollers leave the metal track and the door jams, leans or twists. NovaLift Garage Doors repairs off-track doors for homeowners in Hollywood and across South Florida.

Door off track? Don't run the opener and don't try to push the door back in. An off-track door can shift or fall, and the springs and cables holding it are still under tension.

How rollers end up outside the track

Each roller should sit inside the curved lip of the track from floor to ceiling. A roller comes out when something forces the door sideways or the track stops holding it. A car bumping the door is a common cause. So is something left under the door as it closes, like a trash bin or a bike.

Worn rollers, loose track brackets and a broken lift cable can also let the door drift out of line. When one cable fails, the door tilts and can pull rollers out on either side.

Off track or bent?

Door off the track

Here the track is still straight, but one or more rollers have come out of it. The door usually looks crooked or sits jammed partway.

Once the cause is found, the rollers can often be guided back in and the track checked for alignment.

Usual cause
Obstruction, cable, worn roller

Track bent

An impact can kink or flatten a section of track. Rollers catch on the bend, and the door may jam or pop out again soon after.

Depending on how badly it is bent, a section may be straightened or may need to be replaced.

What to know about off-track garage door repair

An off-track door is a door out of balance. Fixing it is about more than getting the rollers back in.

  1. Don't run the opener

The opener can drag a jammed door further out of line, bend panels or damage its own drive.

  2. Find the cause

An off-track door is usually a symptom. A slack cable, a worn roller or a loose track bracket can send it straight back out.

  3. Panels can take damage too

A door forced while off track can crease panels or crack hinges. Worn rollers and hinges fall under general repair.

  4. Tension stays in the system

Even with the door jammed, the springs and cables are still loaded. Leave them, and the bottom brackets, alone.

Off-track questions

Off-track garage door FAQs

Can I push the roller back in myself?

It's not a good idea. The door is heavy and out of balance, and the parts holding it are under tension. It can drop or shift without warning.

Why did my door come off track when nothing hit it?

Worn rollers, loose track bolts or a cable that lost tension can let the door wander. Sometimes the track itself has drifted out of line over time.

Should I close the door before it gets fixed?

Leave it where it stopped rather than moving it. Keep cars, children and pets away from the opening until the door is secured.
