What to Do First When a Garage Door Comes Off Its Track

A door that has left its track is no longer fully supported. What you do in the first few minutes matters more than anything else.

When a roller leaves its channel, that corner of the door is no longer guided or held by the track.

It usually happens fast. Someone backs out before the door is fully up and clips the bottom panel. Or the door is closing, makes a scraping noise, and stops at an odd angle with one corner hanging out of the track. Either way, you are looking at a door that is now partly held by its rollers and partly by nothing at all.

A sectional door can weigh as much as an adult. While its rollers sit in the tracks, that weight is controlled. Once some of them come out, the door can twist, buckle or fall.

The first five minutes

  1. Stop pressing the button. The opener does not know the door is off track. It will keep pulling or pushing, which bends panels and drags more rollers out.
  2. Unplug the opener. Pull the plug at the ceiling outlet so nobody in the house can run it by accident from the wall button, a remote or a phone app.
  3. Clear the area. Keep children, pets and anyone else out from under the door and away from both sides. Do not walk or drive under it.
  4. Leave the door where it is. If it is stuck partway open, resist the urge to pull it down or push it up.
  5. Look, from a distance. Note which side came out, roughly how many rollers are out, and whether a cable looks loose or a spring looks broken. Photos help.

Mistakes that turn a repair into a bigger one

Pulling the emergency release

The red release cord disconnects the door from the opener. On a door that is off track and partly open, that can take away the one thing still holding it up. If the springs or cables are also damaged, the door can drop the moment the trolley lets go.

Hammering the roller back in

Online videos often show someone prying a track open with pliers and tapping a roller back into place. That works only when nothing else is wrong, and it is hard to know that from the floor. If a cable has slipped or the door is out of balance, the door can lurch as soon as the roller pops in.

Loosening track bolts

Track brackets hold the track to the wall and ceiling. Loosening them while the door hangs on the track can drop the whole side. On the lower corners, the cable bracket is under spring tension and should never be loosened at all.

Why doors come off their tracks

The cause matters because a door put back on its track without fixing it will come off again.

  • An impact. A car bumper, a lawn mower or a bike against the bottom panel can push rollers sideways out of the channel.
  • A broken cable. When one side loses its cable, the door tilts and the rollers on that side are forced out. Our article on why lift cables fray and snap covers that chain of events.
  • Loose or bent track. Track brackets work loose over time. A track that has drifted out of line pinches some rollers and lets others wander.
  • Worn rollers. Rollers with cracked wheels or worn bearings wobble in the track instead of rolling, and can climb out at a bend.
  • An obstruction. Something on the floor or in the track can stop one side while the opener keeps driving the other.

What the repair involves

A technician first secures the door so it cannot move, usually with clamps on the track. Then they check the springs and cables, because a door off track often has a cable problem behind it. The tension may need to be let off the springs before the door can be safely realigned. Bent track sections are straightened or replaced, the rollers are guided back in, brackets are tightened and the track is set plumb and parallel. Finally the door is balanced, reconnected to the opener and run several times while the force and travel limits are checked.

Damaged panels, bent rollers and stretched cables are usually found during this process, so it helps to expect a short list of related parts rather than a single fix.
